VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP AHEAD OF IMPORTANT JUDGING EVENT FOR NEWBURY

Local residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and help showcase the best of Newbury during a community clean-up event scheduled for Saturday 5 July ahead of the Thames and Chiltern in Bloom campaign entry by Newbury.

Thames & Chiltern is the regional part of the RHS Britain in Bloom campaign that inspires community groups in towns, cities and villages to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action.

The route clean-up will take place from 10am to 2pm, beginning at St Nicolas Church and concluding at Victoria Park. Volunteers will walk the route—approximately 7.5 miles—picking up litter, tidying green spaces, and helping prepare key locations along the way. Volunteers who are unable to complete the full walk are welcome to join at Barn Crescent around 12 noon for the second half of the clean-up.

Cllr Ian Jee, Chair of the Town Council’s Green Spaces Working Group said, “This is not only a clean-up effort but also a chance for volunteers to preview the route that will soon be under the watchful eye of the Thames & Chiltern in Bloom judges. Members of the Newbury in Bloom team will be present to share insights about the route’s highlights and answer any questions about the judging process”.

He continued, “This is a great opportunity for the community to come together, take pride in our town, and contribute to a positive first impression, every helping hand makes a visible difference.”

For security reasons and to ensure the best possible presentation, specific judging details and route information will not be made public in advance. Residents are encouraged to bring gloves, litter pickers if available, and plenty of enthusiasm.
